Motherhood & Identity
Online therapy for moms in Texas
When Motherhood Changes Who You Are
Becoming a mother reshapes nearly every part of your life, including how you see yourself. The identity you had before, as a professional, a partner, a friend, an individual with your own goals and interests, doesn't disappear, but it can feel buried under the demands of caring for everyone else.
Many of the women and moms I work with describe a similar feeling: they love their children deeply, and they also miss parts of themselves they can't quite name anymore. Both things can be true at once, and neither cancels out the other.
What This Looks Like
Motherhood and identity work in therapy often centers around experiences like:
Losing touch with who you are outside of "mom." Struggling to answer questions like "what do you enjoy?" or "what do you need?" because those parts of you have taken a back seat for so long.
Grief for the life or self you had before. Even a wanted, loved pregnancy or child can come with real grief for the version of yourself that existed before motherhood, and that grief often goes unacknowledged.
Pressure to meet impossible standards. The cultural expectation that a "good mom" is endlessly patient, always present, and never resentful, and the shame that follows when reality doesn't match that image.
Shifting relationships. Changes in your relationship with your partner, your own parents, or your friendships, as the demands of motherhood reshape who has time and energy for what.
Postpartum changes. Adjustments in mood, identity, and body image following pregnancy and birth that extend well beyond the newborn stage.
Wanting to parent differently than you were parented. The work of figuring out who you want to be as a mother, sometimes without a clear model to draw from.
What Therapy Can Offer
This work isn't about becoming a different person, or about being told to "just make more time for yourself." It's about slowing down enough to understand what's actually happening beneath the exhaustion, and finding your way back to a version of yourself that feels more whole.
In our work together, we might explore:
What parts of your identity feel lost, and what it would mean to reconnect with them
The beliefs about motherhood you're carrying, and where they came from
Practical ways to hold both love for your children and your own needs, without guilt overriding everything
How to communicate what you need to your partner, family, or support system
Rebuilding a relationship with yourself that isn't only defined by what you do for others
You Don't Have to Figure It Out Alone
If you've been feeling like a version of yourself has gone quiet since becoming a mom, that feeling deserves space, not dismissal. Therapy can be a place to slow down, make sense of what's changed, and find your way back to yourself, alongside motherhood, not instead of it.
